Beware, Cook it with Care!

Admit it, we all want an Instagram-able dish to share with our loved ones, but we can only meet this goal by having the right knives for the proper purpose (check out our previous blog: The Right Blade for the Right Job). You may be handling a useful tool in your kitchen, behold, it is deadly when it’s misused. So, before a knife can give you a serious injury, take these safety tips seriously!

A sharp knife is a safe knife. Yeah, we hear you say, “What?!” But here’s the point: a sharp knife can give you more control whenever you’re cutting. Knowing that you’re handling a sharp knife will give you enough balance on how much force and strength you need to maintain in order to achieve an excellent slice. Unlike a dull blade, razor-sharp cutlery will have a lesser tendency to slip off your hands. With this in mind, you will have a small chance of cutting yourself while preparing a delicious dish. Surely, you’re more apt to be careful with sharp knives, yeah?

Know how to hold your knife properly. You don’t need to go to an exclusive culinary school to know how to safely hold a knife. There are lots of books or magazines that write about cooking/slicing tips or you may get your gadget and Google it yourself. If you have a Chef friend or someone you know who loves cooking, then might as well invite over for some bonding in the kitchen and know how they do it. Who knows? They can even share with you their secrets!

Attention is better than none. Let’s face it. Who wants to be disturbed while doing something? Of course no one! So before being distracted, stop a bit and deal with whatever interruption first. Make sure to give your undivided attention to what you are cutting before it cuts you in no time.

Meanwhile, let the lights on! Make sure that you are chopping in an area where the lighting is sufficient. You should be able to visibly see what you are cutting and how you are cutting it. If the lighting is insufficient, increase the lighting immediately.

Use a secured cutting board. As the cliché goes, “prevention is better than cure,” so if your cutting board doesn’t have rubber feet/stopper to help you hold the counter surface, put a wet towel under the board before cutting anything. Another thing, make sure that your cutting board is knife-friendly and properly sanitized. After washing your board, keep it dry and let it rest upside down on a flat surface. After that, disinfect your board without the involvement of harmful chemicals by sprinkling it with rock salt and a half slice of a medium-sized lemon. Rub the lemon in a circular motion on the board, wash it thoroughly with water and let it dry. Credits to my grandma for this tip!

Clean and secure your blades. Ensure that your knives and its handles are clean to avoid salmonella-like contamination. Always clean it with detergent, sponge, and water right after using it. Do not let the dishwasher clean it for you so it won’t bang the edge and ruin your blades. Avoid putting your knives in a sink full of water even for quite a while to avoid rust and so preserve its quality. There are safe ways you can store your knives. A magnetic knife rack is a good idea, kitchen knife blocks, in-drawer knife blocks, or an under cabinet knife storage. These storage safe spaces will help you keep your knives away from your workplace.

Whether you’re home or with friends camping in the wilderness, these tips are common and are easy to follow.
These guidelines can also demonstrate one’s level of responsible behavior and ensure the advantages of knife use without injury.
